When I reflect on how creating my myth differs from the study of a myth, I find it much easier to study a myth. When I was actually creating my myth, it was challenging for me to come up with an original topic that wasn’t already used before. When I study a myth, I am able to take in all the multiple aspects of the myth and see it for what it is. When I create a myth, I worry too much to try and not copy someone else’s myth and that takes away from the experience. What I also saw differing between these two concepts is that the studying of the myth doesn’t really involve too much of your imagination. When you actually create a myth your imagination has to soar to another level and this actually allows you to think of out of this world ideas.
What I actually learned from this experience is that creating the myth is actually really fun if you allow yourself to think freely. I can see myself using this concept in the future as a teacher by asking my students to come up with a myth and draw the best interpretation of their myth. I think the website is a bit more challenging but if I have the students draw or make a collage and this would actually turn into a fun project for them which is something that is really great.

Hey Tiffany! I’m glad that you were honest about your writing experience. It is difficult to be original now when you can go online and find out that someone has already used your idea somewhere! (All that talk in Theater is getting to us!) CREATIVITY! Haha. But seriously, you shouldn’t stress so much because most of the myths we read were not all original either, they are variations of the same story. I think you are probably being too hard on yourself. I think reading the myths actually do require you to use your imagination, or else you wouldn’t believe any of it! I like the magic and fantasy of myths. I like the idea that there doesn’t have to always be a scientific answer for everything in this world. I think students will enjoy this type of literature because of the elements of fantasy; it is something both the boys and girls can relate too.
ReplyDeleteHello there Tiffany,
ReplyDeleteI too find it much easier to study myth than create one. I’m glad I’m glad I’m not the only one who had a hard time creating my own myth! I definitely feel like the pressure is on, to be creative and all of that, but without copying what has already come before. Sometimes I think we just need to get out of our heads and roll with it, so that we’re not concentrating on the final product so much we’re paralyzed to move on.
You bring up a good point about the study of myth being kind of bland. I agree with you---to a point. I don’t know if I would want to be a mythologist (is that the term?), and go all over the world painstakingly collecting myths and stories from every culture, but remember, up until recently much of the academic world brushed off myths as nothing really worth studying. So while it may seem cut and dry to us now, since we have all of these categories, we have to think about all of the people who came before and argued for the cultural validity and significance of myth.
Also, are you doing the La Llorona type myth, or is that someone else? If it is you, I’m really looking forward to seeing the final product. I think it will be really cool. =]
Hi Tiffany!
ReplyDeleteI also found it so much easier to study and learn about the different myths rather than creating my own. It seems that a lot of us are in the same boat as far as feeling the pressure to be creative and original. I would also include the study of myths in the classroom and I like your idea of having your students make a collage depicting their myth! I always liked putting together collages when I was younger. You are so right when you say we really have to let our minds flow freely to develop a myth. I am completely stuck and I need to let loose. I’m trying so hard to find something original and interesting at the same time. I agree that studying myths doesn't necessarily stimulate the imagination, but it is definitely entertaining and interesting.
Hey Tiff,
ReplyDeleteI was able to relate and agree with many of the myth related threads in your response,
In response to your response, I think you strike on a very truthful point in that creating a myth you have to dig deep into the backside of your info-dome to draw a unique way to present something as complex as the myths we were assigned. In general, I think this is good thing because it forces the student to get into the habit or possess the experience of developing imagination and there is so much value in imagination, directors, many other artistic fields lend themselves to this sort of thinking, but yeah your right when studying the myth it doesn’t involve all that much imagination.
Totally like that idea of the collage I may have to borrow that idea from you someday, it does sound like it would be a much more fun-friendly feasible assignment. I could definitely see the hidden value of your idea to want to present the idea in a more different way through art, where they can apply a lot of their motor skills into creation of a mythological art, it does sound very cool.
Cool post,
Hey Tiffanny,
ReplyDeleteI can see how you think studying a myth could be easier because the myth is already presented to you and all you need to do is analyze the myth’s elements to figure out what the myth is about, or what type of myth you are reading. Creating myth’s could be a somewhat harder to do because we have to use our imaginations to create something new, while still including the elements of the type of myth being created. I also felt that I needed to be careful to not copy someone else’s myth when I was creating my own myth. However, after a while, I just started writing and just letting everything out even if some of what I was writing had been a part of someone else’s myth. I just stopped worrying about copying someone else’s myth because some myths are alike, but they are good in their own, unique ways.
Hi Tiffany!
ReplyDeleteI have to say I agree! Studying a myth is pretty easy because everything is already laid out for you. Writing a myth is tough because there are already so many myths out there and we automatically struggle to make ours unique.
I think allowing ourselves to think freely and not getting bogged down by the desire to be "unique" will help us write myths that are worth reading. I can't wait to see what the class comes up with!
